How to synchronise system clock with NTP on Apple Computers

  1. Open Date & Time Settings
    1. Click the Apple menu in the top-left corner and select System Settings (or System Preferences on older macOS versions).
    2. In the sidebar, click General, then select Date & Time.
  2. Verify Automatic Time & Time Zone Settings
    1. Ensure Set time and date automatically is toggled On.
    2. Confirm the Source is set to Apple’s time server (or click Set… to specify an NTP server).
    3. Ensure Set time zone automatically using your current location is enabled (or set manually to your broadcast region).
  3. Force Immediate Time Synchronisation
    1. Toggle Set time and date automatically to Off, wait 2 seconds, and toggle it back to On. This forces macOS to query the network time server immediately.

If the clock fails to sync, or if your machine is drifting out of alignment with the playout system, use this method to point your Mac directly to the public NTP pool via Terminal:

  1. Configure & Resync via Terminal
    1. Open Terminal (press Cmd + Space, type Terminal, and press Enter), then run:

    2. sudo sntp -sS pool.ntp.org
    3. Note: When prompted, enter your Mac login password and press Enter (no characters will appear on screen as you type).

Verification:-

In the Terminal window, run sudo sntp pool.ntp.org. Look at the offset line at the end of the output (e.g., +/- 0.002140 +/- ... secs). For broadcast playout alignment, this value should be well within ±0.300000 secs (300 ms).
